Stronger Europe. Stronger Sweden.

Freedom is under attack. Russia’s full-scale invasion of Ukraine is a threat to us all, and Eurosceptic forces are campaigning to make our European Union weaker. This is why liberals are at the forefront in defending freedom and fighting for a stronger Europe.

The only way to solve the challenges facing Europe is by acting together. We need to transit away from fossil fuels and secure the green jobs of the future. We need to fight organised crime reaching far beyond our own borders, and support Ukraine to win the war against Putin’s dictatorship. We need to be firm in our defence for democracy and rule of law across Europe and worldwide.

Even as the need for a strong Union is greater than ever, strong forces are trying to slow down and weaken cooperation in Europe. From the populists, we hear the very same rhetoric that led to Brexit and the slow train crash that the UK is now enduring alone. Any attempts to weaken Sweden’s commitment to Europe would be extremely dangerous for our economy and our security.

Liberalerna is Sweden’s most pro-European party, and we belong to the ALDE Party and the Renew Group on the European Parliament. Our vision is a strong and united EU, where Sweden is a full member and has adopted the euro. Deeper European cooperation is the only way forward to defend our freedom today and in the future. When Europe is stronger, Sweden is stronger.

Our top priorities for the 2024 European election

Putin must be defeated. We must support the Ukrainian freedom fighters with funds and weapons until the last Russian soldier has left Ukrainian soil. Sanctions on Russia must be tougher, and vetoes abolished so that no single EU Member State is able to stop increased support for Ukraine.

Nuclear is needed in Europe’s green transition. While Europe’s right-wing populists campaign to stop the green transition, Liberals opt to accelerate climate efforts. Green-house emissions must become more expensive, and we need more fossil-free energy: solar, hydro, wind and nuclear.

European police fighting gang violence. Hide on the Mediterranean coast must no longer be an option for Swedish criminals. Liberalerna is proposing a common European police force operating across borders, which could put an end to drug smuggling, human trafficking and terrorism.

EU Action against children’s screen addiction. Social media and screens are increasingly dominating children’s lives, while research is showing severe risks to mental health and school performance. Europe should stand with parents against the tech giants to help more children succeed at school.

Protect rule of law and abortion rights. The EU must never be an ATM for authoritarian regimes. We need sharper sanctions against Member States that breach press freedom, LGBTI+ rights, and rule of law. Liberalerna wants the right to free and safe abortion to be protected in the European treaties.

Upgrade to premium EU membership – switch to the euro. Sweden must become a full EU member and join forces with our partners who work for a stronger EU. Switching from the unstable krona to a stable euro would boost our competitiveness and give us influence over issues that affect jobs and welfare in Sweden.
